Lesson Learned: What Foreigners in Thailand Should Check Before Buying an Air Conditioner from HomePro or any other establishments

Buying a new air conditioner in Thailand should be simple. You walk into a well-known store, ask for the features you need, pay, arrange installation, and expect everything to work as promised.

Unfortunately, that was not our experience.

We recently made an expensive mistake when buying air conditioners from HomePro, and we are sharing it so other foreigners living in Thailand do not go through the same problem.

Our Costly Aircon Mistake in Thailand

Recently, we purchased five air conditioners from HomePro. Our main requirement was very clear from the beginning: we wanted a WiFi-enabled air conditioner that could be controlled remotely through an app.

For us, this was not just a bonus feature. It was a key operational requirement. Remote access matters when managing property, preparing rooms in advance, monitoring usage, or controlling cooling without being physically present.

When we visited the store, we asked specifically for the best-value WiFi aircon. The salesperson recommended a Haier model and told us it had WiFi capability. Since that was exactly what we needed, we agreed and moved forward with the purchase.

Everything seemed fine at first. We paid the bill, arranged installation through the store, and the installers arrived on schedule. The installation process itself went smoothly.

Then came the shock.

The Air Conditioner Had No WiFi Feature

As soon as we tested the newly installed units, we realized there was no WiFi mode, no app connection, and no remote smart control at all.

That was the moment we knew something was wrong.

We searched the model number online and discovered that the aircon model listed on our final bill did not include WiFi functionality. The WiFi feature was available only on a different model.

In other words, the product we received was not the same as the one we believed had been presented and sold to us.

The Biggest Problem: Proof

This is where the real trouble began.

Once the units were installed, it became very difficult to argue the case. There was no clear written proof of what had been verbally promised in the store. It became a matter of our word against theirs.

That is why this experience turned into such an important lesson.

Important Lesson for Foreigners Buying Appliances in Thailand

If you are a foreigner living in Thailand and planning to buy an air conditioner, washing machine, refrigerator, or any other large appliance from HomePro or any electrical retailer, do not rely only on the salesperson’s explanation.

Before you pay, always check these things carefully:

1. Verify the exact model number

Make sure the model number on the quotation, invoice, and final bill matches the exact model that was shown or recommended to you.

2. Do not rely on the price alone

Two different models can look almost identical and may even have the same or very similar price, but their features can be completely different.

3. Confirm key features in writing

If WiFi, app control, inverter technology, energy saving, warranty terms, or any other feature is important to you, ask the staff to write it clearly on the quotation or sales document.

4. Double-check online before payment

Take one minute to search the model number on the manufacturer’s website or Google. This simple step could save you from a very expensive mistake.

5. Keep all sales documents and screenshots

If possible, keep photos of the display label, brochure, product tag, or any online listing connected to the model you were shown.

Why This Matters Even More for Expats in Thailand

For many foreigners in Thailand, shopping for appliances can already be challenging because of language differences, unclear product explanations, or assumptions made during the sales process.

Even in large and reputable stores, misunderstandings can happen. When they do, resolving them later may not be easy, especially if there is no written evidence.

That is why being extra careful is essential.

Our Current Update

At the time of writing, we still have not reached an amicable solution.

We hope the matter can still be resolved fairly, but for now, we simply want to warn others so they do not make the same mistake we did.

Final Advice

If you are buying an air conditioner in Thailand or anywhere else, especially from a major retailer like HomePro, always check the exact model number before making payment. Never assume that the installed product has the same features as the one described to you in conversation.

This one step may save you a lot of money, frustration, and disappointment.

We are sharing this purely so that fellow foreigners and expats in Thailand can protect themselves and make more informed decisions when buying appliances.
